Malena Quality Produce was founded in 1953 by Juan B. Stamos and has grown to be the largest grower/shipper of eggplant in North America, and provides other premium produce using strict quality assurance standards from farm to market.
Malena Quality Produce is currently a seasonal supplier of winter vegetables (October -May) including Chinese, Italian and Korean eggplant; Roma, vine ripe and grape tomatoes; Chinese long beans, round beans, hot peppers, bell peppers, pickles and yellow squash. In addition, Malena grows greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers and Persian pickles.
During the summer of 2003 Malena management will confirm and announce strategic partnerships with growers in Mexico and the U.S. who wish to participate in a mutually beneficial year round product availability relationship for eggplant and other products. This is in direct response to large retailers that desire one high quality supplier on a year round basis to contract for on time deliveries of specific produce items.
Malena Quality Produce is a progressive grower/shipper working with family farm partnerships that commit to independently monitored product quality assurance standards and procedures for food safety that meet or exceed U.S. Food & Drug Administration criteria for pest control management and other farms practices. Malena Quality Produce provides unconditionally safe produce that consistently looks good and tastes superb.
Malena has made a commitment to stay current on market trends including consumer attitudes, ethnic requirements and interests in using product for better health. As a participant in the PMA's Foodservice and Retail events in Monterey, CA, Malena is evaluating the latest trends on packing and shipping products to food distributors throughout the U.S. Malena has also become a PMA Gold Circle member and upgraded their 5-A-Day membership. During PMA Fresh Summit, Malena will be talking with large retail and food service customers about their needs and how Malena can assist them.
Malena has engaged in varietal seed research to ensure maximum production from their semi-tropical microclimate which is different from growing conditions elsewhere. This attention to detail has allowed the company to maintain a research and development program to test varieties that grow best in the fertile valleys throughout Mexico
In conjunction with several seed companies, Malena tests new seed varieties for enhanced taste, texture, color, and firmness. These factors can affect packing, shelf life and varietal segments that are specifically grown for key segments (ethnic, foodservice and processing). Malena's reputation for quality and consistency is well known internationally and is the foundation of their international presence.
Malena Quality Produce and their Agricola San Isidro growing operation has been recognized for "Export Excellence" by the government of Mexico. More than 250 Mexico-based companies of all types compete for the "Export Excellence" Presidential Award that is given on the basis of business practices, product quality, diversification, differentiation and demonstration of their social and environmental commitments.
